Beer, it's what's for breakfast. Wait, did I just say that? Anyway, here's a few that have been poured down the throats since last issue, all in the name of helping you find beer you like. It's hard work, but someone has to do it.

Have a beer you think we should try? Homebrew and want to send us a sample? Send communications to: riderx@singlespeedoutlaw.com

Widmer Oktoberfest 5% ABV Portland, Oregon
Octoberfest (or, Oktoberfest as this beer is named), brings to mind beer drinking. What better way to spend a festival, or a month for that matter. Widmer's version of the beer is billed as a crisp amber beer. Pretty acurate description. Octoberfest beers generally go down smooth and aren't aggressively flavored or hopped. Good for drinking from large beer mugs while polka dancing. Widmer's version does this well. Ok, I didn't test it out while polka dancing, but that's not the point. Pale amber to copper in color it poured with a fine 1/2 inch white head. Smelled slightly sweet and tasted clean. Sweet on the tongue with a faint spicy bitterness from the Mt. Hood and Tettnanger hops and a medium-thin body that went down very easy. Prost!

Wild Goose Amber Frederick, Maryland
A crystal clear amber color and a 1 inch tan head are what you get when you pour this one in a pint glass. Very nice to look at, classic looking english-style ale. The nose is slighty yeasty and sweet, but very mild. The first taste gives a faint smokey taste which must come from the chocolate malt. Crisp, dry and malty with a medium bitterness from a combination of Williamette, Hallertauer, Tettnang, and Cascade hops. A well balanced beer that leaves a lingering bitterness on the tongue. You can pound these in the pub all night. Gold Medal winner for the 1997 World Beer Championships and Silver Medal winner for the 1996 World Beer Championships.

Rogue Mocha Porter Newport, Oregon
Rogue, brewer of many fine beers really does it well with this porter. Pours out dark, so dark that you can't see the faintest bit of light through the glass. The tan head rises up slow and big until it crests over the top of the glass in a perfectly formed snowball, not letting a bit of the precious liquid spill. Smells dry and chocolatey. The taste is complex: dry, roasty, chocalatey, crisp and bitter. Lots of elements playing well together. One of the best porters I have tasted. Twelve ounces of bottle-conditioned goodness.
