Artist: Clutch
Album: Pure Rock Fury

Heavy. Loud. Fierce. Guitars that invoke Sabbath, a growl that some says sounds like the devil and a tight rhythm section that binds it all together. This is Clutch and Pure Rock Fury is their new album. It's doubtful you will hear these guys on the radio, but who cares. What's important is that you hear them period. Psychedelic Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Stoner Rock. These can all be used to describe the music, but none of these labels would be complete. Clutch has built a loyal following of gearheads by relentless touring and putting on solid shows at every outing. Pure Rock Fury is the 4th full length album by these Maryland boys (some might say 5th if you count the Jam Room extended EP). Mixing live recordings with studio work you have some music that takes no prisoners. No sappy ballads here. You get the feeling of an 18 wheeler coming up to speed and rumbling along, making time across the starlit desert night. Rubber, steel, and diesel rolling along with a purpose. Need to get pumped up for a ride, put this disc in. Don't get where I'm going yet? Well, get on over to www.pro-rock.com and check out one of the live shows they have on their site. Better yet, check the tour schedule and go to the show when they are in town. You'll see why they don't need any stinking videos on MTV.

Artist: Rollins Band
Album: Get Some Go Again

Rollins ditches his old band and teams up with Mother Superior to put together a nice heavy album of hard rock.

Rollins tells it like he sees it. The band's got the low end covered. Songs like 'Get Some, Go Again', 'Change it up', and 'I Go Day Glo' make you want to jump in the pit and they feel like a punch in the chest. 'Love's So Heavy' mixes the heaviness with smooth jamming. The extended jam 'LA Money Train' is more groove than heavy, but it's one of the best songs on the album. An extended jam clocking it at 14 minutes, it's got a little bit of everything going on. Rollins ranting about the Hollywood money train, jazzy/bluesy feel, couple of guitar jams, a guest spot by Wayne Kramer of MC5, even a sax part thrown in.

14 songs of mostly heavy hitting shit. What did you expect, it's Rollins.

J Mascis & The Fog - Fletcher's Baltimore, MD 4/12/2001
Featuring J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr), Mike Watt (Firehose, Minutemen), George Berz (Dinosaur Jr)

In a packed club that holds maybe 300 people (probably less) J Mascis & The Fog put on a burning show that left everyone in awe and wanting more. Watt comes out looking like a lumberjack with a red and black plaid shirt, grisly beard, chomping a cigar. These guys are all business, just straight up rocking out. Very little talk between songs except J giving a few humble thank yous. Feedback, freakout city on the guitar, Watt going off in a frenzy on the bass, George smoking the drums, staring out into space and making it look effortless. The sound was tight. Watt did a couple vocals. Stay plugged in with the rest of the tour at the Freakscene Bulletin Board. Here's the setlist from the show:

  • Severed Lips
  • I'm Not Fine
  • Same Day
  • The Wagon
  • Back Before You Go
  • All The Girls
  • Budge
  • Waistin
  • I've Had It
  • Repulsion
  • Ammaring
  • Not Right
For the the encore, it went like this:
  • Just Like Heaven - Cure Cover like you've never heard before, J doing trademark feedback guitar work.
  • Down on the Street - Stooges cover, Watt on vocals. This one burned.
  • Freakscene

Read Watt's take on the show posted on Mike Watt's Tour Diary. Catch them while they're still on tour, you won't be disappointed.
